In order to verify the date of manufacture for guarantee purposes, some products had their production date month, day and year rubber-stamped or handwritten internally during manufacture. The rubber-stamped items included FH pickups and effects pedals. Some FH pickups had the last two digits of the year of manufacture stamped on the small metal tab normally covered by a black plastic sleeve. The Company name was also stamped on the underside of some products and while not as accurate as a precise date, this at least establishes a period. Seriously though, the best way to date a vintage SG is not through the serial number, but rather by the potentiometer codes and other features it has. Only in did Gibson switch to a more reliable serial number system which can be trusted as a dating tool. Even then, you want to have a rough idea of when it was made based on the features first, because they have used several different serial number formats through the years.
